Acupuncture

A Better Way to Heal

Whether it is chronic pain, fertility challenges, trouble sleeping, or a condition you have been told to just live with — acupuncture can help. The sooner you start acupuncture treatment, the faster you feel better.

That back pain that flares up every morning, the stiff neck you have been working around for months, the headaches that keep pulling you out of your day — acupuncture can actually help these conditions start to resolve. Not just feel temporarily better. Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medicine-based approach that has helped people heal for thousands of years, and it is still one of the most effective forms of integrative medicine available today. If you have been thinking about trying acupuncture, this is the right place to start.

What It Does and Why It Helps

Acupuncture points are believed to connect to specific pathways in your body that control pain, inflammation, and healing. When an acupuncturist places acupuncture needles into these points, they stimulate the central nervous system — which tells your brain to release endorphins and other natural chemicals that reduce pain and calm your stress response. In other words, acupuncture may stimulate your own built-in recovery system.

Acupuncture also resets how your brain handles stress and sleep. If you are lying awake at 2am with a mind that will not shut off, acupuncture regulates your cortisol levels and activates your parasympathetic nervous system — the part responsible for deep rest and recovery. Digestion, jaw clenching, and tension all respond for the same reason — they are driven by stress and nervous system imbalance, which is exactly what acupuncture corrects.

Research backs this up. Randomized clinical trials have consistently shown that acupuncture outperforms sham acupuncture — where needles are placed in random spots as a placebo — for conditions like chronic pain, migraines, and insomnia. Acupuncture is not guesswork. It is tested, evidence-based care.

Acupuncture is also one of the safest treatments available. The acupuncture needles are single-use, sterile, and thinner than a human hair. No drugs, no downtime, no side effects. Most people feel deeply relaxed during acupuncture and walk out feeling better than when they walked in. We always recommend letting your doctor or healthcare provider know that you are receiving acupuncture so it can work alongside any other care you are getting.

Your Treatment at Honor Wellness

Every acupuncture session begins with a full health assessment so your acupuncturist can build an acupuncture plan around your specific health needs. This is what sets our clinic acupuncture apart — we do not use a one-size-fits-all approach. Your acupuncturist reviews your health history, your current conditions, your lifestyle, and any test results you bring in before a single acupuncture needle goes in.

For muscle tightness and chronic tension, we may recommend Electroacupuncture — gentle electrical stimulation through the acupuncture needles that retrains muscles that have shut down due to pain or injury, restoring communication between your nervous system and the affected area for deeper relief and better movement.

For stubborn knots or restricted movement, Intramuscular Stimulation targets trigger points directly within the muscle. We also offer Cupping to increase blood flow and loosen fascia, Gua Sha to reduce inflammation and relieve neck and upper tension, and Red Light Therapy — scientifically proven to reduce inflammation at the cellular level and speed up healing. Each of these works best when combined with acupuncture as part of a complete treatment plan.

Chinese acupuncture forms the foundation of everything we do. Our approach draws from traditional Chinese medicine acupuncture techniques, but your acupuncturist will also use modern acupuncture methods when they serve your health goals better.

What to Expect

You receive acupuncture on your very first visit. Just wear loose, comfortable clothing.

1. Initial Examination

We go beyond your symptoms to figure out why your health is not improving on its own. This can include functional muscle testing, Chinese medicine pulse diagnosis, and tongue diagnosis to identify patterns of imbalance and determine how much function acupuncture can help restore.

2. Rate of Response

Your first acupuncture treatment doubles as a diagnostic tool. Your acupuncturist assesses how your body reacts to the acupuncture needles, which tells us exactly what pace of recovery to expect. This step removes the guesswork and helps your acupuncturist design the most effective plan going forward.

3. Your Treatment Plan

Based on your response, we map out a clear acupuncture plan — how many sessions, how often, and what acupuncture techniques we will use. Every plan is built around your health goals and adjusted as you progress.

Your first acupuncture session lasts about 60 minutes. Follow-ups are typically 45 to 60 minutes. Many acupuncture patients feel noticeable relief after the very first visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Acupuncture is not painful in the way most people expect. The needles used are extremely fine, much thinner than a typical medical needle, and most patients feel little to no discomfort upon insertion. You may experience a mild sensation of tingling, warmth, or a gentle ache around the needle site, which is completely normal and is actually a sign that the treatment is working effectively.

How quickly acupuncture produces noticeable results depends on the condition being treated and the individual. Some patients feel immediate relief or a deep sense of relaxation after their very first session. For chronic or complex conditions, meaningful improvement is typically felt after four to six consistent sessions. Your practitioner will monitor your progress and adjust the treatment plan to ensure you are moving in the right direction.

Falling asleep during an acupuncture session is a very good sign. It means your nervous system has shifted into a deep state of rest and relaxation, which is exactly the environment your body needs to heal. Many patients drift off during treatment and wake up feeling refreshed, calm, and recharged. It is one of the most common and welcomed responses to acupuncture and nothing to be concerned about at all.

New sterile needles are used for every single acupuncture session without exception. All needles are single use, meaning they are opened from a sealed sterile package at the start of your treatment and safely disposed of immediately afterward. They are never reused or shared between patients. This practice meets the highest standards of hygiene and safety and is strictly enforced by regulatory bodies governing registered acupuncture practitioners in Canada.

The most common signs that acupuncture is working include reduced pain levels, better sleep quality, improved energy, a calmer mood, and more regular bodily functions such as digestion and menstrual cycles. You may also notice a deep sense of relaxation that lasts for several days after each session. These changes reflect your body responding positively to treatment and gradually moving toward a healthier and more balanced state.
