Sciatic Pain

sciatic pain

About 40% of adults experience sciatic pain over the course of their lives.

The sciatic nerve is the biggest nerve in the body. It starts from the back and travels all the way to the bottom of the heel of your foot.

When you experience sciatic pain, you often experience the pain radiating along the path of the sciatic nerve, going down the entire leg. Typically, sciatic pain is unilateral and affects only one side of your body.

Frequently asked questions

Sciatic pain is most commonly caused by compression. The nerve can be pinched from a herniated disc, subluxated joints, or tight piriformis muscles. The piriformis muscle is a flat, band-like muscle located on the buttocks near the top of the hip joint. When the piriformis muscle is irritated, it can compress the sciatic nerve resulting in Piriformis syndrome.

The symptoms of sciatic nerve pain include moderate to severe pain in the lower back, buttocks, and down your leg. You may also feel numbness or weakness in your lower back, leg, or feet. Sciatic nerve pain can feel quite debilitating and should be treated as soon as possible. Sciatic nerve pain usually takes 4-6 weeks to get better but could last longer without treatment.

Sciatic pain is commonly diagnosed by history taking and physical examination. Your practitioner will do a series of muscle testing to examine the muscular functions of your lower extremity. In severe cases, an X-ray, CT scan or MRI might be needed depending on the initial findings.

In our clinic, we use a combination of acupuncture, manual therapy and Rapid Release Technology in the treatment of sciatic pain.

Acupuncture – Works by releasing tight muscles, regulating neurotransmitters to reduce pain and improve the delivery of highly oxygenated blood flow to the affected soft tissue. Acupuncture has been proven to be an effective treatment for sciatic pain without the side effects of prescription medication like NSAIDs and muscle relaxers.

Rapid Release Technology Rapid Release Technology (RRT) uses vibrational waves to break up scar tissue and adhesion to restore proper blood flow. RRT can help relax tight muscles and opposing muscle groups to restore proper function and eliminate soft tissue tension

Manual Therapy – a combination of Cupping Therapy and Gua Sha can help by removing trapped stagnant blood circulation in the deeper layers of your soft tissue. By removing the trapped metabolic waste, it allows new oxygenated blood flow to heal to restore proper muscular tone.
