anxiety
Persistent anxiety can be debilitating. We can help you!
Many people struggle with anxiety and often times it may occur with no trigger. It is estimated 2.5 million Canadians experience anxiety chronically in their lifetime. Most people believe that anxiety is all in the head and by assuring yourself with positive thoughts, it will go away. In fact, anxiety is intricately associated with the sympathetic nervous system (SNS).
Anxiety is your body’s normal response to stress. It’s a feeling of fear for what is to come or the unknown. However, when the anxiety continues for a prolonged period of time or gets worse, it is considered an anxiety disorder. Symptoms of anxiety include racing thoughts, uncontrollable over-thinking, difficulty concentrating, feeling irritable or problems with sleep.
Frequently asked questions
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF ANXIETY?
Anxiety may come in different forms and generally categorized into five major types:
- Generalized Anxiety Disorder – persistent and excessive worry about different things that may seem insignificant and out of their control.
- Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) – recurring, unwanted, thoughts or sensations that make people do things repeatedly.
- Panic Disorder – Abrupt surge of intense fear or discomfort that peaks within minutes. It can result in the person experiencing an extremely stressed state.
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder – a mental disorder that occurs after a person experiences a traumatic event such as a serious accident, natural disaster, or death.
- Social Anxiety Disorder – a mental health condition that involves intense fear of being watched and judged by others while in a social setting.
WHAT CAUSES ANXIETY?
Although the exact cause of anxiety is still unknown, numerous studies have suggested a direct relationship between your gut and brain health in connection to anxiety. The neurotransmitters found in your brains such as norepinephrine, serotonin, dopamine, and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) are believed to be linked to mood and anxiety disorders. In fact, it is estimated that 90 percent of these neurotransmitters are made in the digestive tract.
HOW CAN HONOR WELLNESS HELP?
In our clinic, we use a combination of acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine and breathwork in the treatment of anxiety disorders.
Acupuncture – We have found acupuncture to be an extremely effective treatment for anxiety. Research has shown acupuncture has a profound effect in activating the parasympathetic system. Systemic reviews of research revealed acupuncture can reduce anxiety almost twice as well as psychotherapy or the use of medication. Acupuncture treatment has shown to reduce the stress hormone cortisol and enhance the regulation of brain neurotransmitters to calm the nervous system down.
Chinese Herbal Medicine – Our practitioners are highly trained in prescribing herbal medicine. Customized herbal formulas are prescribed specifically to each individual’s underlying pattern to correct imbalances on a systemic level. There are a number of herbs that are known for their ability to treat anxiety, reduce stress and normalize the sympathetic nervous system.
