Tennis and Golfers Elbow

Tennis and Golfers Elbow

Despite their names, most people who suffer from these conditions aren’t athletes.

Tennis Elbow, or lateral epicondylitis, is an injury to the tendons in your elbow as a result of repetitive motions of the wrist and arm. It affects people of all ages, but it is the most common in adults between the ages of 30 and 50. Most people who suffer from tennis elbow are people whose jobs require types of motion that can lead to tennis elbow.

Golfer’s elbow, or medial epicondylitis, is a condition that causes pain on the inside portion of the elbow. Essentially, anyone who is prone to repetitive stress and overuse the elbow can find themselves with pain inside the forearm. It is a type of tendonitis caused by inflammation and can affect simple tasks like typing at a keyboard, texting or any movement that involves the use of muscles, tendons and ligaments surrounding the elbow.

Frequently asked questions

HOW TO DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN THESE TWO CONDITIONS?

The pain of the tennis elbow is felt where the tendons of your forearm muscles attach to the tiny bony knob on the outside of your elbow. The pain may also radiate into the upper and lower arm. You may also experience weakness, numbing and tingling sensations in the forearm when you grip and hold an object. It is important to remove the aggravation factor and receive treatment. If it’s not treated, tennis elbow may worsen to a point you may have difficulty with simple tasks like handshaking, opening a jar, or brushing your teeth.

HOW CAN HONOR WELLNESS HELP?

In our clinic, we use a combination of acupuncture, manual therapy and Rapid Release Technology in the treatment of tennis & golfer’s elbow.

Acupuncture – Works by releasing tight muscles, regulating neurotransmitters to reduce pain and improve the delivery of highly oxygenated blood flow to the affected soft tissue. Acupuncture has been proven to be an effective treatment for elbow pain without the side effects of prescription medication like NSAIDs and muscle relaxers. Often, releasing tight muscles on the rotator cuff with acupuncture can also very effective in the treatment of elbow pain.

Rapid Release Technology Rapid Release Technology (RRT) uses vibrational waves to break up scar tissue and adhesion to restore proper blood flow. RRT can help relax tight muscles and opposing muscle groups to restore proper function and eliminate soft tissue tension.

Manual Therapy – a combination of Cupping Therapy and Gua Sha can help by removing trapped stagnant blood circulation in the deeper layers of your soft tissue. It helps to break up adhesions and scar tissue that may be on the forearm and around the elbow. By removing the trapped metabolic waste, it allows new oxygenated blood flow to heal to restore proper muscular tone.
